Hi Danny,

Hats off on an interesting and brave post - I think too few filmmakers acknowledge just how expensive the process can be, and so often 'zero budget' films turn out to be anything but.

I'd be interested to know if you feel it was worth the money in the long run, or whether you'd have done things differently with hindsight. As a writer I had two shorts produced by Screen Yorkshire a while back; one on a low budget, one with about £10k. The £10k one felt more professional and like making a proper film, but I think everyone gained more from the low budget one, where everyone mucked in and there was a far greater sense of collaboration.

Obviously you've yet to try the film out on the festival circuit, but I'd be interested in your view of this.

Cheers,

Jon

Hi Danny, any thoughts on using the iPhone for filming? I know you shot an experimental film recently. I would be interested in writing an article on you for my website <a href="">smartmoviemaking.com</a>?

Best for 2012

Apparently Adobe can't import OMF files from FCP. As I mentioned in the video, I already tried that option, without any luck.

Hi Jarle,

Many thanks for the feedback, I'm new to Adobe and this was the quickest way I could do it at the time. I do really like your idea of editing the EDL in a text editor and then doing a 'search and replace'.

Will keep that in mind for future :)

Thanks

Danny

Instead of AIFF can we get the audio converted to OMF during the shift from FCP to CS5.5? Will that give us discrete audio tracks to work with?

Most people will probably get XML to work, but this is a very valid workaround if it doesn't. Thanks for sharing!

For a (much) quicker workflow, couldn't you just open the EDL in a simple text editor and do a "search and replace" to replace .mov with .r3d?

If that doesn't work, you could also mark ALL the offline video files in the project panel (type "offline" in the project panel search field) and relink them one by one without going back to the timeline. Still a lot of manual relinking, but less clicking.

I'm very, very curious why the XML file would not work. ProRes should be fine. I'm glad you found a workaround, though.

Hi Jonathan,

ProVision in Leeds did me the most amazing deal on all the kit, Fuji supplied the film. Check out the 'Meet The Crew' section on this site and you'll see a full list of the crew.

Cheers
